Volunteer Opportunities & Ways to Give Back: Local Shelters, Food Banks, and Community Kitchens

by Kayleigh Stalley

Giving back has always been close to my heart. I still remember volunteering alongside my mom as a teenager, serving meals to those in need. Those early experiences taught me the true value of community and the profound impact a helping hand can have. Now, I’m grateful to carry on this tradition with my brokerage, recently spending a meaningful day of service at the Oregon Food Bank.

There’s something incredibly special about coming together—whether with family, friends, or colleagues—to support our neighbors. It’s not just about the meals or donations; it’s about the connections we make and the hope we share.

As Giving Tuesday approaches, I encourage everyone to consider how they might make a difference. Whether it’s dropping off canned goods, donating funds, or volunteering your time, every act of kindness counts. Local shelters, food banks, and community kitchens are always in need of support, especially during the holiday season.

  • Donate: Financial contributions, non-perishable foods, or essential supplies are always appreciated.
  • Volunteer: Many organizations offer flexible shifts for individuals or groups—perfect for families, friends, or workplaces.
  • Spread the Word: Sometimes, sharing information about local needs or upcoming events can inspire others to get involved.

If you’re looking for a place to start, the Oregon Food Bank is a wonderful organization making a real difference in our community. There are also many local shelters and community kitchens—just a quick search can connect you to opportunities nearby.

As we move into this season of giving, let’s remember that every gesture, big or small, helps build a stronger, kinder community. I hope you’ll join me in giving back—on Giving Tuesday and beyond!
